MOVIE & BOOK CORNER

My friend, Mr. Bassman, Esq. recommended a movie called "Young @ Heart. When I looked it up on Netflix, they summed it up in one long sentence:

“Coldplay, the Clash and Jimi Hendrix will never sound the same once you've heard the Young@Heart chorus, a group of Massachusetts senior citizens who thrill audiences worldwide with their unusual -- and unusually poignant -- covers of rock songs.”

Young @ Heart

I’m not a senior citizen (yet), just old but I saw Jimi Hendrix perform when I was young and senior citizens surely would know him. But I couldn’t tell you who Coldplay or Clash are or was and I wondered what seniors would do with any of that music. Luckily, Netflix had a trailer to watch.

The trailer made me jump in my chair because it started with a lady in her eighties screaming. Of course, it was taken out of context to get viewers attention and it certainly got mine and I’m glad it did.

The movie is technically a documentary but there is a generous amount of performance, and what a great performance indeed. Follow the ensemble as they prepare for a public performance and stay for the extra footage at the end. This is one of the most heartwarming and inspiring movies I’ve ever seen.

Rebuke not an elder, but intreat [him] as a father; [and] the younger men as brethren;
1 Timothy 5:1

Based on a true story, A Love Divided is a moving and dramatic story about a marriage between a Catholic and a Protestant in 1950’s Ireland. We think nothing of such a marriage in today’s world and to explain it to someone of another faith; well, they would insist it shouldn’t be much of a story.

A Love Divided

However, this family faced a gut wrenching conflict of deciding under which faith their children would be raised. This was after all, a predominantly Catholic village in Ireland where the Catholic Church definitely ruled.

The brave and passionate couple would have the struggle of a lifetime to make their relationship survive and gather the courage to make their own decisions in the face of their history and upbringing. Considering the time and place, few of us today would have known what to do other than pray.

ONE NATION UNDER GOD

2When a land transgresses it has many rulers; but with men of understanding and knowledge its stability will long continue. 4Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them.
Proverbs 28: 2,4

In 1938, Veterans Day (then called Armistice Day) became a national holiday. It’s the day we publicly thank veterans who defended life and liberty. We honor those who swore allegiance and obedience to God and country, even unto death. We rightly pay tribute to those who brought freedom to the world and protected liberty at home and abroad.

In honoring our veterans, we acknowledge the lawful use of force to protect our citizens from the wickedness of our own people and from hostility outside our borders. At times, members of our armed forces have assisted local law enforcement when called upon. Most often, our armed forces have opposed evil regimes that endangered our citizens in time of war. God calls government to curb evil and vice and to uphold peace and liberty.

Yet, true liberty comes only from Christ. Christ’s Gospel instills faith, awakens conscience and enables obedience to the Lord. God bless our nation, that it may be one free nation under God!

Please add this in your prayers:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for those who guard and protect our liberty.
Amen
